María & Jadrian

July 30 – August 1, 2021

Laurens, NY

Setting

The whole wedding weekend is happening at a farm in Laurens (pronounced "Lawrence"), New York. But for guests, the important address to know is the Laurens Central School, where you'll park.

Laurens Central School
55 Main Street

Driving distances from various airports:

  • Albany: 1½ hours
  • Syracuse: 2 hours
  • Rochester: 3 hours
  • NYC area — JFK, LGA, or EWR: 3½ hours
  • Buffalo: 4 hours
  • Boston: 4 hours
  • Burlington, VT: 4½ hours

If you're planning to fly and then rent a car, please check car rental prices and availability before booking your flight! Albany and Syracuse are not very big airports, so their supply of rental cars may run low.

The Farm

The farm is technically just over the town line in Oneonta, NY. It previously belonged to Jadrian’s great aunt and uncle, Diz and Robert Schlee. Sadly, they both passed away in 2020, though Maria got to meet them in February 2019. Their younger daughter, Jadrian’s cousin Amy, has her own house on the property with her husband, Wayne, and their two kids. Amy and her sister Lori have graciously offered us to use this land for our wedding, but for the most part the two houses are off-limits for wedding guests.

The ceremony and reception will take place entirely outdoors (under tents as necessary). Diz and Robert’s house will be available for limited use for taking care of babies, changing clothes, and stashing belongings, but should not be considered a space to spend time. Due to the limitations of country plumbing, the toilets in the house are reserved for use only by those above the age of 75 or with mobility impairments. For the rest of us, there will be a fancy portable restroom trailer — it's basically three nice restaurant bathrooms built into a shipping container.

Cell reception is spotty at the farm. The ground is mostly grassy; the dancefloor will be the only hard surface underfoot.

Parking

Parking is very limited at the farm. As such we ask that all guests park in the parking lot of the Laurens Central School, just a five-minute drive (two miles) away. We'll provide on-demand transportation back and forth between the parking lot and the farm, so if you leave something in your car it will be very easy to go back and get it. Note that masks are required at all times in the shuttle.

We'll also have a sort of bag check at the farm, so you can bring a few extra things with you (a coat for the evening, for example) and leave it in an accessible place.

Weather

In late July in Laurens, the sun rises around 5:30am and sets around 8:30pm. Daytime highs are typically in the low 80s and overnight lows are in the low 60s. The heat of the day doesn't kick in until about noon. Summertime weather is usually mild, though very humid. We’ll have our fingers crossed for good weather, but it pays to be prepared for rain and mud, intense sun, cold wind, and evening temperatures even down into the 50s.

The Region

Laurens is just north of Oneonta, in Central New York, in the valley of the Susquehanna River. It’s a two-hour drive from the middle of Catskill Park, from the southern Adirondacks, and from Ithaca and the Finger Lakes.

Things to do within an hour of Oneonta:

  • Walk, hike, swim, or paddle on state land — Gilbert Lake, Riddell State Park, Arnold Lake, Emmons Pond Bog, Table Rock, South Hill State Forest.
  • Swim in creeks and swimming holes.
  • Crawl the Cooperstown Beverage Trail, including the famous Ommegang Brewery.
  • Visit any of the many nearby cideries.
  • Cooperstown, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, is only half an hour away. It's on the southern tip of Otsego Lake, which is like a baby finger lake.
  • Oneonta and Cooperstown both have nice downtowns, with shops and restaurants. Oneonta is a college town and Cooperstown has loads of tourist stuff. The Otsego County tourism website has loads more resources for visitors.
  • Explore Howe Caverns, about an hour east on the interstate.
